Today is National Taco Day, and because it happens to fall on a Tuesday, we also get the bonus holiday known as Taco Tuesday.
That's not a coincidence. That's the universe telling you to eat tacos.
And apparently, almost everybody agrees.
About 90% of American adults say they like tacos, while roughly 83% eat Mexican food at least once a month. About 17% say they eat it every week.
But here's the statistic that really needs an investigation:
2% of Americans have never eaten a taco.
Two percent!
What are these people doing? Living in a cabin in the Upper Peninsula with no access to a tortilla?
Michigan Has Some Taco Decisions to Make
Americans are pretty divided on how they like their tacos.
About 53% prefer soft shells, while 47% go with hard shells.
Michigan's official position should probably be: Why choose? Get both.
And 71% of Americans say they prefer tacos over burritos.
That's another win for tacos.
A burrito is basically a taco that went to the gym, got wrapped up and started taking itself too seriously.
Cheese Wins the Taco Election
Cheese is the favorite taco topping in 47 states.
Forty-seven!
Meanwhile, onions were the No. 1 favorite for only 3% of people.
But let's be fair. Just because onions aren't your favorite doesn't mean you don't want them on your taco.
That's the problem with taco statistics. They're complicated.
Cilantro is even more controversial. When people were asked which topping could ruin a taco, cilantro was the most popular answer, followed by black olives.
Here in Michigan, we have enough things to argue about already.
Michigan vs. Ohio.
Detroit vs. everybody.
Coney Island vs. Coney Island.
We don't need to start a cilantro war.
How Many Tacos Can You Eat?
The average hard-shell taco fan eats about 7.3 tacos a month, while soft-shell fans average about 6.9.
But Arizona apparently isn't messing around.
About 10% of Arizona residents surveyed said they can put away six or more tacos in one sitting.
Six tacos?
That's not dinner.
That's a taco-based endurance event.
And if you're attempting six tacos in Michigan, you better have a plan for the drive home.
So What's Your Taco Style?
Are you a soft-shell person?
Hard shell?
Extra cheese?
Hot sauce?
Cilantro?
No onions?
Whatever your answer, today is the day to celebrate.
And if somebody asks why you're eating tacos on a Tuesday, just tell them:
It's National Taco Day.
If they say, "But it's Tuesday," you can simply respond:
Exactly.
Now go get yourself some tacos, Michigan. Your dinner plans have officially been handled.
